About Louisiana State University
Louisiana State University, often referred to as LSU is a public co-educational university. It was founded in 1853 near Pineville, Louisiana, under the name of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy. Its first session began on January 2, 1860. LSU is known as one of the premier institutions in the South and is recognized as the only Research University-Extensive in Louisiana. In addition, LSU is amongst the few universities in the nation having land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant status. The academic orientation at LSU provides the students with a firm footing to make meaningful contributions in their field.
